Formed in 2009, Gallery On The Square is a Big Bend Arts Council-sponsored Art Gallery. Gallery on the Square is located at 115 W. Holland Avenue in Alpine.
The gallery is a cooperative of 26 area artists featuring paintings by Aaron Brooks, Judith Brueske, Jean Cargo, Patsy Culver, Mary Paloma Diesel, Amanda Wyn Chance, Judith Loya, Marshall McCall, Feather Radha, Shelly Rogers, Charlotte Senneff, J.R. Smith, and Beatrice White; photography by Tim McKenna; ceramics by Amanda Calhoun, Margaret Hughes, Oliver Hughes, Janet Stewart and Gregory Tegarden; woodcraft by Alberto Cavazos and Dalvin Jordan; fabric/silk tapestry with jewelry by Carol Fairlie; jewelry by Diane Baylor and Maria LeJeune; and iron work by Larry Crawford.
In 2011, thanks to the efforts of the Big Bend Arts Council, the City of Alpine was designated one of only 16 Cultural Districts in the entire State of Texas by the Texas Commission on the Arts. A framed certificate commemorating this event is on display in the BBAC Gallery on the Square.
Member artists share the responsibility for running the gallery. The hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily; closed on Wednesdays.
ARTWALK is an especially significant event for the Big Bend Arts Council. The organization conducts its annual membership drive and encourages all who appreciate and wish to support the arts in our region to join. Annual membership dues are $25.
The BBAC is currently showing a Members’ Exhibit at the Gallery on the Square. In addition to gallery artists, the Members’ Exhibit gives all BBAC members an opportunity to display and sell their work. Out of town visitors will see an impressive array of artistic talent and creativity and will have the opportunity to meet the artists at the gallery each evening of ARTWALK.
During Art Walk weekend, art demonstrations will be held from 5 pm to 8 pm Friday and Saturday. Demos include Pottery by Gregory Tegarden, Wire wrapped jewelry by Maria LeJeune and Wood turning of unique pens by Alberto Cavazos.
