Alpine’s Gallery Night, Inc. and Texas Commission on the Arts will be bringing art cars and education together in rural West Texas. Executive Director, Keri Artzt wrote a grant earlier this year in hopes to bring more art cars to West Texas during this year’s much anticipated ARTWALK and expose our school kids to a creative concept of “rolling art”. With the help of an arts and education grant from Texas Commission on the Arts we were able to achieve our goal. This year we will have four art car artists arrive a day early, Wilber the Whirlibird, Snappy the Snail, Women That Rock and Austin Bike Zoo.

The art car artists will visit Alpine and Marfa schools on Friday, November the 18th during regular classroom hours. The car artists will discuss their creative process, show off their works of art and take questions from local kids. If you are interested in attending while your kids are in school please let your art teacher or principal know. If you would like more information on these art cars please go to our website: www.artwalkalpine.com

Marian Freeland of Alpine was the winner of Alpine’s Artwalk Savor the Arts dinner for twenty. The five course meal was prepared by Chefs Stephen and Jonathan Wood. It was served by the Alpine’s Artwalk Board of Directors on a crisp autumn evening. Marian’s quests enjoyed the ambiance of the Saddle Club’s patio beautifully decorated with fresh dahlias. The venue was graciously donated by owner Karen Travland.

The appetizing five course meal included:

FIRST COURSE: CAPRESE SALAD
Locally grown tomatoes and basil with buffalo mozzarella, Myer lemon olive oil.

SECOND COURSE: BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP
Butternut squash, cilantro crème, roasted macadamia nuts.

THIRD COURSE: FILET OSCAR WITH ROASTED AUTUMN VEGETABLES
Beef Tenderloin, Dungeness crab, patty pan squash, baby golden and candy strip beets with béarnaise and signature Saddle Club potatoes.

FOURTH COURSE: PAPAYA STRAWBERRY SALAD
Papaya, strawberries, spinach, red onion with raspberry vinaigrette.

FIFTH COURSE: FRENCH SILK PIE
French Silk Pie, chocolate ganache, chocolate whipped cream.

Savor the Arts is an ambitious grassroots endeavor created by Alpine’s Artwalk Board of Directors to provide local and area school systems with funding for their art programs. Artwalk’s goal is to raise $10,000 every year to be distributed directly to the art programs in our schools.

For more information visit our website: www.artwalkalpine.com

Alpine’s Artwalk board of directors would like to take this opportunity to thank those in our communities that support the arts.

Alpine Hosts Free Art Event and Entertainment Nov. 18-19

ALPINE, Texas (Sept. 20, 2011) ─ The weekend before Thanksgiving, Nov. 18-19, Alpine’s ARTWALK will celebrate the cultural artisans of the Big Bend region daily from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. During the free art event, many Alpine businesses become temporary art galleries, along with permanent galleries, as artists showcase their work at official ARTWALK locations. The artistic celebration provides Big Bend-area artists an opportunity to display and sell their work. Crystal Allbright from Terlingua serves as this year’s honored artist, and legendary Texas troubadour Ray Wylie Hubbard shares the stage with a lineup of musical entertainers Saturday evening.

ARTWALK is a colorful and zesty affair where visitors spend the weekend touring all-day open houses to view artwork in various mediums while enjoying socializing, entertainment and food along the way. Portraits, sculptures, oil paintings, watercolors, etchings, jewelry, carvings, metalwork, weavings and crafts of all kinds are featured. Many of the participating artists donate a piece of art to the silent auction held in the newly renovated Granada Theater. The auction closes Nov. 19, at 8:00 p.m.

Crystal Allbright shares her love of the Big Bend region and its influences through various artistic mediums, including painting, pastel and pencil drawing, and photography and video. Her current work may be seen at Desert Sports in Terlingua or on her website at www.crystalallbright.com. During ARTWALK, Crystal’s work will be on display at Trans Pecos Bank.

Musical entertainment begins on 5th Street each day at 6:00 p.m. Rugged as the Big Bend and one of the original Texas outlaws, Ray Wylie Hubbard will rock the stage on Saturday evening with his smelting of country, blues and poignant poetic lyrics. Local musical favorites Matt Skinner and Groupo de la Paz open for Hubbard. Additionally, an array of free entertainment is featured each evening.

ARTWALK is promoted by Alpine’s Gallery Night, Inc., a non-profit organization that promotes the arts in rural west Texas. Founded in 1994, Alpine’s Gallery Night was the brainchild of local artists Keri Artzt and John Davis. With only six locations participating the first year during Gallery Night, now called ARTWALK, the event has blossomed into one of the biggest art events in the Big Bend region.

“The original purpose of the art event was to get people to interact with and be more aware of our local art community,” said Artzt, event chairperson and owner of Kiowa Gallery. “That first event has continued to grow beyond our imagination and now ARTWALK has become a much anticipated weekend event for both local residents and visitors.”

Other activities during ARTWALK include an Art Attack for kids grades K-6, an open air food market, an art car movie screening, and the Wild Wheels Art Carz parade at noon on Saturday. For additional information on ARTWALK 2011, visit www.artwalkalpine.com or call 432-837-3067.
